Did you know that a selfie is one of the best ways to improve your presentation skills?
Not that type of selfie!
I’m talking about a video-selfie a.k.a., – playback of your presentation.
Professional athletes watch the video of their performances as a part of their preparation. Maybe this is one of the reasons why they make all of that money! In professional sports, that call is going to the ‘film-room.’
For our purposes, let’s call it a Video-Selfie Playback.
Watching yourself on video is the fastest way to improve your presentation skills.
Here are some suggestions to help you get the maximum benefit from viewing the playback.
Before you watch the video remember:
- You look like that.
- You sound like that.
- Get over it!
- We had to watch and listen; now it’s your turn!
- First Playback — We don’t often get the chance to “see ourselves as others see us.” Relax and become a member of the audience listening to your talk. Just get a general impression of yourself and your message.
- Second Playback – Listen Critically:
- Watch the first parts of the video to judge how well your ideas come across; are they organized, connected, and clear?
- Turn off the sound for a part of the video. How do you come across on the stage? Do you speak with authority? How confident do you appear?
- Now turn up the volume and turn your back to the video or close your eyes. How well does your voice work for you? Can I follow the message without seeing the presenter? Imagine you are listening to a podcast.
- Lastly, play it in fast forward mode. Not only is this funny to watch, but it also allows you to see the physical gestures you use (or overuse). Watch your use of face and body. Did you pace too much? How did you over-use your hands?
