On Sunday, 29-year old Hideki Matsuyama made history by being the first Japanese man to win The Masters golf tournament – one of the four most prestigious events in professional golf.
I’m a casual golf fan.
Beyond the usual suspects, Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy, and Tiger, I had never heard of him.
However, he did one thing that stood out and helped him win $2,070,000 in prize money.
And you don’t have to be a sports fan to replicate his success.
Before Hideki’s historic win, he was already successful in his career:
- Career earnings of over $31 million
- Ranked as high as #2 in the world
- Owns homes in Japan and Florida
- He does not fly commercial
And he accomplished all of this as a DIYer – Do-It-Yourselfer. He is one of a handful of professional golfers without a coach.
However, after all of this success, he had a crisis. After four years without a win, he hired a coach this year: Hideori Mezawa.
According to Matsuyama, his coach, “He is my mirror, and he provides me with good feedback. I can now see my blind spots.”
After Hideki hires a coach,
- He makes history.
- Instead of making millions, he’s on his way to a billion. According to golf analyst Andy North, “This win is worth a $1 Billion in lifetime earnings, including endorsements.”
Hideki Matsuyama’s success with a coach reminds me of my own experience and success with hiring coaches.
No. I probably will not make a billion dollars.
But, I am on the path to making millions.
My coaches held up the mirror and helped me see my blind spots, especially during a crisis.

- Worldwide Pandemic (2020 to present)
