Procrastination has many disguises.
My go-to disguise is preparation.
For example, two weeks ago, I was on the coaching call with my coach Lisa Larter.
Lisa wanted me to start posting again on social media after having two major surgeries (hip replacements) in 60 days.
Insomnia, medication, and rehabilitation were over.
I was hesitant and giving her my best well-reasoned arguments.
Lisa is not very patient, especially when she’s listening to well-reasoned excuses.
“You’ve got one minute!”, said Lisa Larter.
“I’ve got one minute to do what?”
“You’ve got one minute to post something on LinkedIn.”
“Lisa, as you know, I’m the world champion of public speaking. This means I’m the world champion of preparation, not off-the-cuff! Preparation–that’s my jam! I need more time to prepare.”
“OK, Mr. Preparation. You’ve got 2 minutes to prepare and post something. Otherwise, this coaching call is over.”
The value of this coaching call was a significant investment. Having it end before we got to my agenda was not an option.
I put on my ‘big boy–rehabilitation Zoom pants’ and posted this: Stop Being Realistic!
In less than 48 hours, over 1700 people read the post—my highest number on LinkedIn in 2021.
Additionally, I reconnected with several long-time friends and clients.
Sometimes procrastination is disguised as preparation.
When it comes to your next presentation, proposal or ask, is preparation a disguise for procrastination?
