What if I told you that you could predict the future? Would you believe me?
I’ll prove it to you.
On New Year’s Eve, what are some behaviors you expect to witness?
- Fireworks
- Countdown
- Alcohol
- People Singing Badly
What about the 4th of July? (Or your country’s birthday, if you are reading this outside of the USA).
- Fireworks
- Cookouts
- Alcohol
- People singing badly
What about your birthday?
- Candles
- Cake
- Alcohol
- People Singing Badly
Basically, Fire, Food, Liquor, and Horrible Singing.
See! I told you – you can predict the future.
Fortune telling is not as mysterious or complicated as we assume.
Under the right circumstances, you can predict the future, especially for a high-stakes presentation.
For example, a few years ago, I spoke in Guangzhou, China, at a university.
Using my fortune-telling powers, I predicted that there could be compatibility issues with my computer and their projection equipment.
And I was right!
Bad news. My laptop did not work with their projector. (Some of you are thinking, put your slide-deck onto their equipment. You’re right. That didn’t work either.)
Bonus News: All the directions on their projector were in Mandarin. My Mandarin is nonexistent.
Good news. We found a technician.
Bad news. He spoke only Mandarin. Recall earlier my Mandarin ability.
Good news: We found an interpreter who is fluid in both English and Mandarin.
Surprising news: I had to downgrade the format of my slide deck to work with this equipment.
Great news: It worked.
Pleasant Surprise: I picked up a new coaching client that night. He liked how calm and friendly I responded under pressure.
You never know who’s watching. My calm under pressure turned into over $10,000 USD.
My Secrets: Here are the secrets to my Fortune-Telling ability:
- I anticipated that there would be problems.
- I hit my Emotional Reset Button before the problem materialized.
Hit the Emotional Reset Button before the circumstance in question. That is, anticipate the best and worst-case scenarios, and decide in advance how you will respond. Before I arrived at the venue, I expected problems, and I decided how I would react (emotions) and what I would focus on (solutions, the audience). I had a great deal of fun, and the audience benefited.
Switch to Fortune Teller Mode: Hit your Emotional Reset Button in Advance.
What would happen if you took a small amount of time to anticipate a potentially tricky situation in your life and hit your Emotional Reset Button before you were under pressure?
